Series notes

The Robinson family is sent on a mission to explore a distant planet in the Alpha Centauri system. John and Maureen with their children Judy, Penny and Will are the Robinson family. Also on board is the young pilot Major Don West and a friendly robot. Their Jupiter II spaceship is sabotaged by Dr. Zachary Smith who is unable to exit the spacecraft before takeoff. By the time the crew regains control of their ship after the mishap they are far off course in unknown space. The Robinsons wander from planet to planet trying to find their way home while being undermined by Dr. Smith who has his own nefarious agenda.

The series was conceived to be about a family's survival on their new world and a pilot was filmed but not aired. Somewhere along the line it was decided changes were needed and Dr. Smith and the Robot were added. The first five episodes included footage from the unaired pilot. At the beginning of the series Dr. Smith was an enemy agent of an unnamed nation. As time when on his character became more and more of an inept cowardly buffoon with the series becoming increasingly camp comic fantasy.

The first season was in black and white with the remaining seasons in color.

Lost in Space was canceled in 1968 after a run of 83 episodes. Two unproduced teleplays were discovered in the Irwin Allen Archives both written by television writer Carey Wilber. Each of these has been adapted into a three-part comic book series by American Gothic.

The first was from script The Curious Galactics and published starting March 2016. The story sends John Robinson, Will Robinson, and Major Don West from a run-of-the-mill radar scouting mission into a potentially deadly alien maze.

The second was from script Malice in Wonderland and published starting September 2016. This adventure begins when Will, Penny, Dr. Smith, and the Robot find themselves whisked away to a very different dimension... one with Mad Hatters, talking teapots, and a very angry Queen of Hearts.

Notes: The bit of prose the Robot says referring to Dr. Smith, a man who stumbling feet go crushing blossoms without end, who's fumbling hands are thrust among the heartstrings of a friend is actually a paraphrase from a great poem called A Fools Prayer written by E. Sill in the 1800's.
